FABULOUS and FUN Wedding

Okay, this cake may not look like it was too difficult but I think this one ranked up there with some of the most difficult things I've done yet.  The bottom 2 layers were made of rice krispy treats which was way more complicated than I thought it would be due to the shape of the tiers.  Then trying to put the diamond pattern on this shape is even more difficult.  We put them on once then had to take them off and redo them.  This cake took almost twice as long as I anticipated.  Then we get to the wedding and asked where the cake topper was and they didn't have it so I had to go back and make a bow really quickly and bring it back.  That's why it is a little soft looking.  It didn't have enough time to dry completely to make it super fluffy.  Oh well, it was still a HUGE hit.  Also, the decor for this wedding was AMAZING!  I wish I had photos.  Molly Davis from A Simple Touch Wedding Decor did a FABULOUS job!

Wedding Desserts

These were some desserts I made for a wedding this weekend.  I actually did it for one on Friday and then again on Saturday, on top of all the cakes I did too.  I don't think I've ever worked so hard in my life.  I did have some excellent help from Heather and my sister.  Thanks guys!  We did it.  There were actually 2 other kinds of cupcakes, rice krispy treats drizzled with chocolate, and chocolate covered strawberries but I didn't want to put too many photos on here. It turned out really nicely!

Sophie turns 6

I only got the request for this cake 3 days in advance and I had a ton of work this weekend and almost said I couldn't do it but when she described what she wanted I couldn't turn it down.  Pink on pink giraffe and leopard, with a crown, and lime green bows?  What?  Does it get any more girly and adorable?  I think this cake is darling!  It made my Friday a lot more rushed but I think it was worth it for such a fantastic cake.

Another Sweet 16!

This one was really fun because the birthday girl knew EXACTLY what she wanted.  :o)  She drew a picture of the cake and emailed it to me.  And she did a fabulous job.  She drew the cake better than I could.  It's crazy that I'm not good at drawing my own cakes but I can take a drawing and duplicate it in sugar.  I LOVE what I do!

50th Birthday Party

This was for a surprise birthday party that 4 daughters threw for their mom.  We were supposed to make it pretty and blingy.  I hope we succeeded.  Those are little black rhinestones on the bottom tier.  I used to put those on with my fingers and then I realized that there were special tweezers for that.  Holy cow!  Sometimes I wonder how I get things done when I usually manage to do it the hard way first.  Thanks to all the people who bring these things to my attention and help me make my own job easier.  :o)

Why should girls get to have all the fun???

This cake was for a baby boy shower.  The mom-to-be told me what she wanted and said "why should girls be the only ones to have all the cute trendy stuff?"  Right?  I don't know of too many people who would have requested bling and zebra print on a boy cake but it definitely works for this one!  It is one of my favorite boy cakes for sure!  I did the "wild" zebra print instead of the "pretty" one like on the girl cakes and I think it turned out awesome!  I was wondering if the giant bling on the prince crown was going to be too much but it totally worked.  I loved it anyway...
Oh, the crown says "little prince."  The wrap was too tight to get the whole thing in a picture.

Another 40 and FABULOUS!!!

This cake was for a surprise 40th birthday party and the instructions were to make it pink, black, white, and FABULOUS!  Wow, no pressure!  We were looking for inspiration through some of my friend Erin's scrapbook designs (Glitz Design)  www.glitzitnow.com and found some awesome stickers that were pink, black, white, and FABULOUS, so we turned it into a cake.  They said it was a HUGE hit at the party!  I'm really starting to dig the bling.  I'm not normally a big fan of non-edibles of any kind on a cake but we have to make the exception for the bling because it is just too fun.

Sweet Sixteen!!

Doing the 16 for the top of this cake was a little bit crazy.  I had the six all made but thought it looked funny, then I realized it was backward!  Where is my head?  Then for some reason I thought it was a good idea to make it out of fondant but then when it came time to put it on the cake it completely cracked apart.  It was not good.  So I had to completely remake it out of gum paste at the last minute.  It was a little crazy and I can't believe I didn't think of that in the first place.  I've been a little out of it this week.  Nothing like making the 16 three times!  :o)
But I LOVE the bling on this one.  I ran out of the small ones so we used bigger ones than normal and I completely loved it!  I hope no one tried to eat it.  They are acrylic... not edible...

Baby Girl Blocks

Since I did the baby boy block cake I've been wanting to do a girl version of it so when I got asked to do the cake for a surprise baby shower cake for a girl in a networking group I belong to, I got to do whatever I wanted.  So here is the pink blocks!  We got some bad news in our family the day I was finishing this one so I was a little distracted and this wasn't my best work but it turned out okay.

Gotta Love the Fun Wedding Cakes!

As much as I love doing the traditional "pretty" cakes for weddings I have to say I am especially fond of doing the fun ones.  Thanks for your help Heather!
These guys got married in Hawaii and then this was for their open house here in town.   The decor for this backyard event was beautiful.  It was done by Molly Davis of A Simple Touch Wedding Decor.  You can check out her work at www.asimpletouchwedding.com.

My Cousin's Wedding

Okay, I hardly ever do fake cake but we kind of had to for this wedding.  It was HUGE and we didn't want to destroy the center piece so we just made the top 4 inches of the top tier real cake and the rest styrofoam.  Then we made sheet cakes for 400.  That was an undertaking I tell you...  They originally requested just the 3 tiers, because that's what fit on the stand that I had, but I just couldn't do it.  At the last minute I added the bottom tier because I had the dummy already and it wasn't a big deal to just decorate it.  But then I had to borrow a different stand so it would fit, but overall it was so much better and fit the occasion better because this was one of the most fabulous wedding receptions I have ever been to.  Especially for a back yard reception.  The flowers, decor, and food were AMAZING so kudos to whomever did those!

Easter Tea Party

This cake was for an Easter Tea Party that is apparently a really big thing every year, so I was so flattered that I was asked to do a cake for such a fantastic event.  As you can see from the blog posts, this was the 4th of 4 for this week which made for a very long week and I had been awake for like 23 hours when I started decorating this cake and it was 27 hours before I finally got to go to bed.  This cake is actually much brighter than it looks in the first photo, the lighting wasn't the best this early in the morning.  It was not as yellowish as this picture looks.  I got a better photo of it from the photog for the event (smaller picture) and as you can see it is much better and a much better representation of the true colors of the cake.  The photog is Michelle of Sweet Moments Design and she is AMAZING!  Check out her work at www.sweetmomentsdesign.blogspot.com.  But I LOVED the pink swirls on the bottom tier.  They were my favorite.  It was so fun making a topsy turvy cake.  They are always more challenging but totally worth it for how fun they are.

FABULOUS at 40!!!

This cake was for the most fabulous 40th birthday party ever!  The birthday girl is fabulous, the party was fabulous, and thus had to have a fabulous cake.  It was delish too.  We did it half chocolate w/ chocolate and half lemon w/ white chocolate and raspberry.  YUM!

A Simple Wedding

This cake was for a small wedding so they didn't want something totally traditional or huge.  This cake is based off of a cake from Martha Stewart.com that I thought was fantastic.  This is not the best picture of this cake because the white flowers kind of blend in to the blue cake a little too much.  I have got to learn how to use my camera...  I was going to put pearl centers in the 257 flowers that adorn this cake but it looked just a little too regular so I put the blue metallic dragees in the center which made it way more fun.

Ryan Turns 5

This one was for my neighbor and once again said do something race car... so this is what I did.  I've been wanting to do the checkers for a long time so I finally got the chance.  Then I did the fondant edging to look kind of like upholstery piping.  Then I just cut out the race car.  I have got to find some new letter cutters though.  These are just not my favorite and cutting out lettering with an x-acto knife is not the funnest thing in the world.

My Baby Boy Turns 2

Since my son is only 2 and doesn't have an opinion on what his cake should be like yet I took the liberty to just do whatever I wanted and I thought the glassless fishbowl was cute.  You can't see it very well but there is a lily pad on the top with a little flower.  I really wanted to make a little frog for the top but just ran out of time.  My husband was giving me crap because none of the fish have dorsal fins but I don't care.  If he only knew how much work went into these things he would realize why there are no dorsal fins on the fish.  Happy Birthday Z!

Oh, and if you can't tell I finally got a new camera and can do my cakes more justice by taking better pics of them.  Who knew it would make such a difference...  Yeah!!!

Bohemian Chic Yet Springy

The girls that ordered this baby shower cake were so much fun.   They brought me like 4 different scrapbook papers that were being used for the shower and they were all extremely detailed prints of all kinds of things.  It made designing this cake interesting.  At first we went with "Bohemian Chic" then it turned to "Springy" and this is how it turned out.  The giant flowers were supposed to go on the ledges of the tiers but they were too giant so they had to go on the top.  Plus they kind of interfered with with butterflies too so the top was best.  I have no idea how to make real gum paste flowers but this was my best shot at making them look kind of real but of course not botanically correct.  I'm nowhere near that skillful but for being a total amateur and just making stuff up I thought they were cute.  :o)

Ivy's 12!

I haven't even met this girl but I like her already.  She emailed me about making her this cake weeks ago and it was just too cool how she knew exactly what she wanted and wasn't shy about going about getting it.  A family friend picked it up so I didn't get to meet her but I hope I get to.  Hope you love your cake Ivy!  Happy Birthday!

Another FAB Wedding

I'm not sure if I've ever worked harder in my life than I did this weekend.  I did this wedding cake, these cupcakes for the same wedding and the fly boat cake.  I was up since 3 am and worked until about 7 pm straight through.  It just about killed me off but was totally worth it because this cake turned out great!  and the cupcakes were DARLING.  Piping is not my strong suit so this was a challenge for me.  And piping dark on light is really scary.  You can't make very many mistakes without making a HUGE mess on your cake.  It took SO MUCH food coloring to color the royal icing to make it this color that it will stain anything it touches so you can't wipe off too much without messing up your fondant underneath.  You can't really tell in the photo but it has a gold pearl dust painted over the ivory.  Anyway, it was tough but I'm really pleased with the way it turned out.  Oh, and Thanks to Alix, Sydney, & Jill who rushed to my aid at the last minute when I didn't think I was going to get this cake done or delivered on time.  You guys made it happen!  Thanks!!!!

Wonder Pets Fly Boat

I haven't done many special shape cakes but this one was crazy fun to do.  It was for a 2 year old's birthday and he LOVES the Wonder Pets.  This cake was just so fun!  The flag pole was a dowel wrapped in fondant and the sale was made of gum paste.  I tried to make it ride above the boat but it took way longer to dry than I thought it would and it wouldn't stay up.  Oh well, it was still darling.  :o)
